Poinsettia 2012
December 21 marks the
first day of winter but this year in Toronto, the weather being unusually mild,
the snow has eluded us. The key question on everyone’s mind is whether we are
going to have a white Christmas at all. Meanwhile the poinsettias are in bloom,
with so many beautiful varieties to delight our senses and our soul. If you
don’t know this, the poinsettia is indigenous to Mexico and Central America.
They are usually found in the wild at moderate elevations in the deciduous tropical
forests ranging from southern Sinaloa on the Pacific coast of Mexico to Chiapas
and Guatemala. Joel Roberts Poinsett, the first United States Ambassador to
Mexico had introduced this plant into the United States in 1825 and the rest,
as they say is history. If you wish to learn more, please check out my prior
post on the Poinsettia.
Below
are some of my favorite blooms this year:
Happy Holidays Everyone.
