On the 3 rd of February 2025, begins the year of the Yin Wood Snake (Yi Si), marking a new yearly pillar and also a new path of Annual Flying stars, for the year ahead.

Tai Sui Wu Sui (The Grand Duke of Jupiter) – is in the southeast (142.5 - 157.5) in 2025

Tai Sui, Grand Duke of Jupiter or also known as “General of Time Gods” (Yin Jiao), is a very important aspect of Chinese Astrology, wielding significant influence over fortune, health, and luck. Tai Sui refers to stars directly opposite to Jupiter and sometime refers to the rotation of Jupiter. In any case they are known to influence the Chinese zodiac and are involved in religious Taoism and Feng Shui.

The Chinese Lunar Year Cycle has 60 years, and according to Taoist belief, there are sixty heavenly generals one of whom is the Year Authority, or Tai Sui, who is rotated within the 60 Jia Zi (Jupiter stars). Each has the duty of observing and managing the hour, day, month and year, as well as governing every heavenly body in the sky. They assist the Jade Emperor in taking charge of the well-being of the Mortal World. Each of them takes turn being in charge for a year at which time they are known as that year’s specific Tai Sui. Due to most of them having a military background and having an intangible energy body of War-like nature they are normally known as the Military Generals, or as the Cycle Gods.   Each of their attributes and weapons signifies the well-being of that year. For example, if the Tai Sui of the year is one who holds a pen it signifies political unrest for that particular year. On the other hand, if the Tai Sui of the year holds a spear or sword it signifies the need to work hard and excel for that year. Each year’s Tai Sui has the commanding post wielding his authority over all other deities for that particular year, the sole exception being The Jade Emperor. 

Suffice it to say; with such immense power and influence, no one dares to offend Tai Sui. At this juncture I would like to also add that Tai Sui (Grand Duke Jupiter) has usually been misunderstood as the dreaded punisher whereas, in fact, he is engaged by Heaven to tend to any mishaps and disasters and provide protection. A person's bliss, health, luck and misfortune are all governed under the care of Tai Sui. Pay heed, Tai Sui will note the good deeds and misdeeds of people and so bestow (exact, impose, dole out) rewards or punishments accordingly.

This year’s Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui) is General Wu Sui. He was a (wise and compassionate) scholar and magistrate during the Song Dynasty, renowned for his keen intellect and ability to solve even the most complex cases. His reputation, for being meticulous in thoroughly analyzing evidence, made him highly sought after by other magistrates who often requested assistance; thus, he was promoted to governor of Xiuning County.

During his tenure, a severe drought struck the region. General Wu Sui, determined to help his people, spent three days and nights praying at the temple. His prayers were answered, and rain fell on his county, while neighboring regions remained parched, leading to famine and chaos.

Despite fires, looting and widespread suffering in surrounding areas, Wu Sui’s County had furthermore thrived; this was due to Governor Wu Sui’s subsequent, apt measures. Through tax exemptions and relief efforts, peace and stability had been maintained, making his province a rare haven of order during such catastrophic (calamitous) times.

Moving on: each Tai Sui is linked to a specific direction, leading to potential conflicts with certain zodiac animals. These conflicts arise from the cosmic alignment and can significantly affect individuals' energy fields. Those in conflict with or offending Tai Sui may face adverse effects, impacting their health, finances, and relationships.

In 2016, the ruling Tai Sui is the great general Guan Zhong, one of 60 heavenly generals. There is only one Tai Sui (also known as Grand Duke of Jupiter or Grand Commander of the Year) who regulates events in each year according to the Sixty Cycles.

A brief historical account of this year’s Tai Sui General Guan Zhong

Guan Zhong was born to a poor family but rose to become the Prime Minister of the state of Qi in China thanks in part to steadfast support of an influential, close friend named Pao Shu Ya. The discerning Pao held Guan Zhong in high regard and never once wavered in his belief in Guan Zhong’s true caliber. Pao never considered him weak, even after Guan Zhong had repeatedly failed in his two postings and had twice run away from the battlefield. Guan Zhong was also humiliated by being imprisoned twice but still Pao stood by him. Resolute in his friendship, Pao, with a strong recommendation, eventually persuaded the Emperor of Qi State and secured Guan Zhong the position of Prime Minister.

That’s when Guan Zhong’s true talents shone. Guan Zhong studied the geographical situation of Qi and formed the opinion that in order to let the people live in peace and have better living conditions the governance needed to improve. He therefore drafted a set of administrative rules appropriate to their social conditions. He divided the land into categories and arranged to have taxes collected according to the measure of productivity of each category. After the accrual of wealth he next strove to strengthen the state through emphasis on unification and mutual coordination between the military and bureaucracy. Then he strengthened ties with other states and improved on diplomatic policies by respecting their differing views. He became the most popular Prime Minister, as under his leadership the prime ministers of all States were unified and the state of Qi became the most powerful state.

In 645 BC, Guan Zhong passed away but not before his collective works, which reflected his ideology on self-discipline and administering the state was published.

The state of Qi adopted the policies set by Guan Zhong during the Chun Qiu era and thus ensured the power and stability of Qi for well over 10 generations. 

According to Feng Shui principles, the ruling Tai Sui, who possesses great power, each year is the most highly respected and feared deity. Tai Sui in 2016 is located in the Southwest and, to avoid offending him, one needs to treat this area with particular care.

For starters one should not confront Tai Sui by sitting facing him or sleep with one’s head pointed in the direction of Tai Sui. It is better to have your back to him so as to enjoy his support.

One should avoid doing any construction or repair work in the Southwest for, if Tai Sui is disturbed, those staying in the house will have a tough year ahead with a lot of arguments and sickness. If there is no alternative and serious work needs to be done in this area then avoid starting and ending it here. You can start and end in other sectors. This point should be strongly emphasised: Remember offending Tai Sui may mean one will encounter many obstacles, will get little returns despite significant efforts, will have ill luck with windfalls, disharmony and conflict will arise in families and their career will be rocky only to mention a few problems.

If you have a front door facing southwest you must be careful not to allow the door to slam when entering or leaving. Also avoid placing heavy metal in the southwest this year, as doing so will weaken the good earth and can cause more problems.

All is not bad for the Southwest however, for the flying star # 8 is also visiting in 2016 which can bring fame, wealth, romance, prestige and distinction to one’s life. The traditional Chinese method to appease Tai Sui is to place a Guan Zhong Tai Sui plaque in the South-west in order to pay respect and appease the Deity. In this way one can weaken or avoid the problems any offence can bring. 

There are basically two ways of praying to the “Tai Sui” : “Age Suppression” (Ya Tai Sui) and “Age Praying” (Pai Tai Sui). This is of course not for everyone except for the very devout and it needs to be done at Temple.

“Age Suppression” (Ya Tai Sui)

The former refers to a situation where one prays to the Deity when he/she encounters bad luck. The traditional way to do this is to write down one’s birth date and time on a piece of gold-coloured paper and place it under the idol of the Tai Sui. A year later, this person must “return” the age that he has previously “suppressed”. In some cases, 49 copper coins are used to suppress the paper with one’s birth date and time. However, this method is not very safe and you will need someone who is reliable and familiar with the method to be around to give you guidance. The Temple attendant may do it for you then you give him/her an ang pow for their help & good luck.

“Age Praying” (Pai Tai Sui)

The latter, termed “Age Praying”, occurs when one is doing fine and experiencing good luck therefore they pray to Tai Sui so they will not have any adverse effects due to clashes, conflicts or offences to Tai Sui in that particular year. In this case, the birth date and time are written down on a piece of gold-colored paper which is then brought in front of the Tai Sui and burned after saying prayers. This is a safer and more practical method.

For the general public there is the option of Praying to Grand Duke Jupiter Tai Sui at Home:

During the course of the year for those who have encountered setbacks in their life, health, business or career why not offer your sincere prayers to Tai Sui for peace and a smooth flow of luck? A sincere heart transcends all faith and the individual year’s Tai Sui will always listen.

It’s up to an individual how best to pray. Here’s one way: One can set up an offering of joss paper, incense, candles, fruits (use 5 apples and 5 oranges) or whatever one can manage. When praying, one can tell Tai Sui their name and make their wishes known with a sincere heart. It could be a wish for good health, luck, wealth, prosperity, family safety and so forth. At the end of the year when one’s wishes are fulfilled, its good form to remember with an offering of thanks.

Finally, according to Chinese custom and practice, Tai Sui rituals or prayers are more effective at every 1st and 15th day of every month of the Chinese Lunar Calendar.

Previously we’ve noted that North (about 352.6 to 7.5 degrees) was afflicted with the Three Killings. What makes the North more detrimental this year is that it is also being afflicted by Sui Po. Sui Po, the year breaker Star (also known as the star that "clashes with Grand Duke"), is positioned directly opposite Tai Sui (The Grand Duke).

Suffice to say Sui Po should not be taken lightly and this direction should be treated with the same respect as that of the Grand Duke with no ground-breaking work, renovations or any noisy activities for the entire year. For even though Sui Po’s energy is not as severe as the Three Killings or Tai Sui it could still cause similar bad luck, including fatalities. If disturbed the offended Sui Po can, and normally will, cause immediate health problems especially for the elderly. At home it will perpetuate uneasiness and unrest, bad luck even fatalities, whereas at work it will result in demotion, a career downfall, lawsuits, gossip and many other unfavorable outcomes. The situation can be cured however, with the powerful Pi Yao. One can display the Pi Yao anywhere along north-center-south axis and have it facing the north.

Here’s bit more info on the Pi Yao: Pi Yao is the ninth son of the Heavenly Dragon and has different names depending on where it is sighted. The Pi Yao lives in the heaven, Pi Xiu lives on earth and Pi Kan lives in the sea. All of them brings the same blessings and possess the same properties. The Pi Yao is a protective heavenly creature that has one horn, lion/dog face, hoofs and little wings and a curly tail. Many people prefer using the Pi Yao over Chi Lin because the Pi Yao does not have an anus, he only eats but does not excrete. It has a huge, even infinite appetite. The Pi Yao is also known to be loyal in nature and very obedient to their owners. Pi Yao possesses the ability to transform negative chi into positive, overcome obstacles, drive away evil, subdue bad luck, diminish obstructions, combat bodily harm and terminate stress. The Pi Yao is suitable for stimulating growth in business, securing safety for the family, warding off negativities, inviting fortune and wealth, protecting against intangible afflictions, and appeasing the Tai Sui and Sui Po. In 2014, those who are born under the zodiac signs RAT, HORSE, OX, ROOSTER, RABBIT and SNAKE should be extra vigilant.

If you have a south facing property or have your front doors to the south you must also be careful not to allow the doors to slam while entering or exiting the premise.

All in all you should carry along the symbol of Pi Yao or have it beside you most of the time to ensure that good fortune and luck enters the stomach of Pi Yao and is trapped there. Meanwhile, the Pi Yao’s fierce look ward of evil spirits and it can also identify wicked people, preventing them from harming you. Star #5 Yellow (Lien Chen Star)

The deadliest affliction, known as the Fatal Star #5 Yellow (Lien Chen Star), has flown to the northwest in 2014 and because the centre has no gender this is not good and is a serious cause for concern.

Do not disturb the northwest of your home or business with noisy activities, renovations or maintenance work such as banging, nailing, digging or disturbing the earth or ground breaking this year. Be mindful of this even when you cut your grass; one solution would be to start mowing the lawn from a different direction or corner of the garden.

In the face of adversity and change, hold steady and constant. Do not get too eager to initiate repairs for, if disturbed, Star #5 can lead to injury, accidents and illnesses including fatality. My advice is to have as little activity as possible in the area. If one has an electrical fan here try not to turn it on at any time. Instead of keeping the place dark one should keep it bright. Just do not use "warm" lights. Instead, use low powered LED cold lights that will not aggravate the #5 and at the same time prevent yin energies from accumulating. Please take note that yin energy, once accumulated, can worsen the situation.

If you cannot avoid construction work or excavating then you should place a six-rod metal wind chime between your house/building and the work whilst the work is being done. 

The six-rod metal wind chime, like the bagua, is a fundamental tool used in authentic Feng Shui. The advantage of a wind chime is that it can be used internally to dissolve Shar Chi. If your bedroom is located in the Northwest, move out if possible. Avoid using too much fire element here for it will aggravate the 5-Yellow, keep cold lights (LED) moderately lit. 

The situation worsens if #5 Yellow hits your kitchen. This is because the kitchen already has a strong fire energy that reinforces #5 according to the Five Element Theory. During the years 2004-2024 the northwest will be occupied by #9 of fire nature. Therefore when Fatal Star #5-Yellow which possesses earth energy enters into the fire sector the afflicted energy becomes reinforced and the bad consequences worsen. When the Northwest is disturbed there will be consequences consisting of high amplification of obstruction, serious misfortune, lawsuit and financial losses, obstacles at work, bad news, accidents, disturbance and family disharmony even breakup, injuries, accidents, ailment and at worst: a fatality. Men especially will be at risk if this sector is not cured. The dangers will befall fathers, breadwinners, patriarchs’ and anyone who is in a leadership position.

Pay heed, Tai Sui will note the good deeds and misdeeds of people and so mete out rewards or punishments accordingly.

In the Year 2014 Year of the Horse the ruling Tai Sui is Zhang Ci, and it falls on sector South 2; Tai Sui in this year is in conflict with the Rat. However, it is highly recommended for everyone to carry one even if his or her horoscope sign is not in conflict, directly or indirectly with Tai Sui because you may unknowingly sleep or sit facing him, which will also incur his wrath. The position of the ruling Tai Sui in the subsequent years are: In the Year 2015 Year of the Sheep, the ruling Tai Sui is Yang Xian, and it falls on sector South West 1; Tai Sui in this year is in conflict with the Ox. In the Year 2016 Year of the Monkey, the ruling Tai Sui is Guan Zhong, and it falls on sector South West 3; Tai Sui in this year is in conflict with the Tiger.

As mentioned earlier, this year 2014 Tai Sui resides in the South (and between 142.5º – 157.5º southeast which is only 15 degrees span). Inactivity must therefore be strictly observed so as not to incur its wrath. The Tai Sui conflict is a serious affliction that must not be taken lightly. Tai Sui dislikes noise and commotion. All groundbreaking work, construction work, any renovation/repair work or moving into a new home (that faces the Grand Duke) had best be avoided. When activities are carried out it is deemed a challenge to his authority and a petrifying backlash will likely ensue.

Those afflicted will suffer lots of arguments, legal problems, financial losses, bad luck, illness, injuries, surgery, career setbacks, calamities, and fatalities at home and at work.

Also do not directly confront Tai Sui in the dining room and at work, but it’s okay to have your back facing him. Always avoid sitting with your back to the north otherwise you will find yourself harassed by unscrupulous people and also encounter undue gossip and back stabbing all during 2014. For houses that are facing south you are considered as in confrontation mode with the Tai Sui. Pixiu or Pi Yao

Pi Yao (PIxiu) is a Chinese mythical hybrid creature considered to be a very powerful protector by Feng Shui practitioners. It resembles a winged lion. Pixiu is an earth and sea variation, a particularly influential and auspicious creature for wealth. Fierce looking and covered with whitish-grey fur, Pixiu has the head of a Chinese dragon. Ancient Chinese depictions of Pixiu showed two different types of Pixiu. The difference is with their horns; the male has the single antler, and the female two. The the male with one horn is called Tian Lu (Pi Chen) and female with two horns is known as Pi Ya . Tian Lu is in charge of wealth and displaying Tian Lu at home or in the office is said to prevent wealth from flowing away. Another interesting note is the belief that common wingless Pixiu assists in seeking wealth while a winged Pixiu assists students in furthering their studies.

As with the Chinese Phoenix, the common image of Pi Yao (Pixiu) has undergone change and today it is represented as a single sex. Pixiu has protruding eyes and sharp teeth. Its body resembles a Chinese lion and the legs of Pixiu are those of a Qilin. Looking at the posture of the Pixiu, the creature seems to project a sense of strength, elegance and mobility. Pixiu’s obvious characteristic is its fat body which indicates a full stomach loaded with unlimited amounts of good fortune. It has a single horn on its head and a pair of wings. Likewise it has a big open mouth ready to gobble up fortune. Because of this a Pixiu statue is often employed in the home as a way of receiving and keeping fortune.

The Pixiu is ranked 5th in the order of mythical beings, behind the dragon, phoenix, winged horse and sea horse. Ancient architecture often displayed Pixiu to ward off Yin Qi (bad fortune). The statues of a Pixiu are typically seen on the four corners of the roofs of houses, particularly those of influential people such as the emperor. In ancient China, statues of Pixiu were also used as tomb guardians.

The myth behind the Pi Yao (Pixiu) is that the creature at one time had violated the law of Heaven, and so the Jade Emperor had punished Pixiu by restricting its diet to gold. Thus Pixiu can only absorb gold, but cannot expel it. This is the origin of Pixiu’s status as a symbol of the acquisition and preservation of wealth. It is said to have a voracious appetite for only gold and silver. Therefore traditionally to the Chinese, Pixiu has always been regarded as an auspicious creature that possessed mystical power capable of drawing Cai Qi (good fortune) from all directions.

Displaying a Pi Ya at the affected area of the house or office can avoid misfortune and disasters. The Pi Ya must be placed facing away from the house. For displaying at openings or entrances a pair of Pi Ya is needed.

The Tian Lu is used for attracting wealth. One places it in the designated wealth area to attract wealth or accumulate wealth. Do not place Tian Lu facing any person directly on in a confrontational position. Ideally Tien Lu should not be place on the floor but it definitely should never be place above eye level.

One cannot touch the face and head of the "Pixiu," because the touch from an ordinary person would ruin their wealth.

Pixiu (Pi Yao), a fierce creature has large fangs, visible in the creature’s mouth, with which it attacks demons and evil spirits, draining their essence and converting it to wealth. Pi Ya is useful therefore in warding off evil. Pixiu is also believed to guard against disease caused by evil spirits. Furthermore, Pi Ya has the ability of assisting anyone who is suffering from bad Feng Shui due to having offended the Grand Duke Jupiter (Tai Sui).

Tai Sui is very fond of his pet, the Pi Yao. You may appease Tai Sui therefore, by placing a Pi Yao or Dragon-headed Tortoise in the north sector of the home or office facing the 15º south radius where Tai Sui sits. For this cure, the placement of the Pi Yao should be obvious and not hidden from view, and there must be a metal element involved. Metal here refers to real gold and strong metal. The secret behind this cure is that the "Tai Sui mantra" must accompany the Pi Yao for maximum effectiveness. It actually refers to a set of Chinese incantation of the Tai Sui. This mantra had been used for centuries to help one overcome the wrath of Tai Sui.
